Let’s break down the news of Epstein, because it keeps coming: Republican tweets dumb cryptic message, Assad claims Epstein killed himself, Epstein victim talks on his hidden cameras, Prince Andrew covers his ass, and patsy guards face charges.
In the first piece of news, Republican Congressman Paul Gosar cryptically tweeted “Epstein didn’t kill himself”. The Guardian writes:
Republican Paul Gosar, a staunch conservative from Arizona, issued a series of 23 tweets over a roughly eight-hour period railing against the Democrats’ impeachment investigation of Donald Trump. Taken together, the first letter of each tweet spells: “EPSTEIN DIDN’T KILL HIMSELF”.
As the first public impeachment hearing got under way, it was unclear what prompted the timing of Gosar’s message. Asked whether it was intentional, his communications director, Ben Goldey, replied with an equally cryptic comment:
“All of the tweets pertained to testimony from today’s hearing.
Rest assured, they are substantive.
Every one of them.
All of them.
5 were brilliant.
1 was ok.”
This is, obviously, extremely corny. He thinks he’s so clever too. I hate to do it, but I just gotta say it: ok boomer.
The boomer memeiness of this shows why the left has to accept the truths about Epstein. Generally, most Americans believe there was foul play in Epstein’s death. It’s silly to deny it, and to most people, makes you look very dubious. If the left doesn’t offer an alternate narrative to the right-wing corniness, it’s ceding a ton of territory that’s ripe for class analysis to the right-wing realm of culture wars.
Jeet Heer wrote in The Nation:
“Left-wing Epstein obsessives are a minority. What’s increasingly clear is that the mystery of the Epstein case, combined with the reluctance of the mainstream media to tackle the topic for fear of seeming conspiratorial, is offering an opening to the far right.”
The ironic thing is Jeet Heer is arguing why the left should ignore Epstein theories, and pretend they aren’t real. And yet, at the heart of his text, he gives the most straightforward counter-argument: the mainstream’s reluctance to cover Epstein is an offering to the far right… but it’s only an offering because leftlibs like Heer smugly dismiss it, when Epstein is actually more ripe for left propaganda, if used correctly, than right.
Meanwhile, Bashar al-Assad said that Epstein didn’t kill himself.
From Newsweek, quoting Assad:
“‘American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein was killed several weeks ago, they said he had committed suicide in jail. However, he was killed because he knew a lot of vital secrets connected with very important people in the British and American regimes, and possibly in other countries as well,’ Assad told the outlet, as translated by the state-run Tass Russian News Agency.”
Go off king!
The New York Post wrote:
“One of Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers claims he installed tiny pinhole cameras throughout his Manhattan townhouse as part of an advanced surveillance system to monitor his victims’ ‘private moments.’
“Maria Farmer, who alleges she was recruited in 1996 into Epstein’s sex trafficking operation, said the pedophile financier himself showed her the extensive hidden camera system inside his Upper East Side mansion.
“‘The main thing he did when I walked in, and I thought was interesting, he showed me where the cameras, the men monitoring everything, were,’ Farmer said during her first TV interview Monday on ‘CBS This Morning.‘
“She said Epstein had a media room behind a hidden door where he kept stacks of TVs playing surveillance feeds.”
This actually isn’t new news, but it’s reported in a different way, from a different source, than it has been before. Previously, we learned that Epstein had stashes of tapes labeled things like “Young [Name] + [Name]”.
Hearing that Epstein had his house wired with video cameras, directly from one of his victims though, adds salience and recontextualizes the fact that Epstein filmed for blackmail (and probably pleasure).
Okay, to be honest, I haven’t watched the Prince Andrew interview on Epstein. But, what I’ve heard from it is hilarious — Andrew’s dubious ties to Epstein is obviously not hilarious, but some of the ways he tried to absolve himself were.
New York Times writes:
He disputed her account of an alleged meeting between him and Ms. Giuffre in a club in London. She has claimed that he sweated profusely while they danced, but he told the BBC that he could not have sweated while dancing with her at the time because he had a medical condition, dating from his combat tour in the Falklands War, that did not allow him to perspire.
He said he has since begun to sweat again.
New York Times continues:
“When asked whether he regretted his relationship with Mr. Epstein, which continued after the financier served time for soliciting a minor for prostitution, Prince Andrew said: ‘Do I regret the fact that he has quite obviously conducted himself in a manner unbecoming? Yes.’
“‘Unbecoming?’ the BBC interviewer, Ms. Maitlis, replied with a tone of incredulity. ‘He was a sex offender.’
“The duke quickly backtracked, saying: ‘Yeah, I’m sorry, I’m being polite. I mean, in the sense that he was a sex offender.”
The reaction in the British media and on social media was uniformly withering.
“Not one single word of remorse,” said a banner headline in The Mail on Sunday.
“No Sweat … and No Regret,” said The Sunday Mirror.
And finally, the New York Times writes “Guards on Duty During Epstein Suicide May Face Charges“.
Classic patsies taking the fall!
